MINNEAPOLIS — After coming under fire for his handling of the murder of George Floyd, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman is hoping he’ll escape efforts to recall him from office because no one actually knows who he is.
Despite wielding immense prosecutorial power for over 20 years, Mike Freeman has not gained name recognition with a majority of his constituents, many of whom have been directly impacted by his reluctance to charge cops who kill Black and brown residents.
Local activists are campaigning to recall Freeman, but their petition needs 126,522 signatures from Hennepin County voters and at least some of those people signing need to know who Mike Freeman is.
“It can be really hard to not be recognized for your work,” says Freeman, who claimed that George Floyd’s death was caused by pre-existing health conditions and not the knee that was pressed on his neck for over eight minutes, “but in this case it really works in my favor.”
“I just hope they don’t find out about this recall campaign” added Freeman, “if they were aware that all they needed to do was sign a sheet of paper to trigger a recall election that could lead to my removal from office it would really screw me over”.
“Luckily I don’t think that’ll happen”, he said.
